Reckless Abandon: Throwing Worldly Caution to the Wind

Do you trust God? I mean REALLY trust Him? Do you serve Him with reckless abandon?

What if He asked you to do something that seemed utterly crazy to the people around you? What if following His lead meant taking a risk? How would you feel if trusting Him in an area of your life meant turning your world upside down? The Bible is full of stories of men and women of God who did just that. I think of Gideon who told a majority of his army to go home when he was about to face one of the greatest armies in the world at that time. Everyone must have deemed him a fool. But he trusted God and was given a mighty victory.

When someone lives a life of reckless abandon, one of two things is happening. Either they are foolish and prone to making bad decisions that have dire consequences. Or they know something that the people around them don’t know. In this case, what seems like a reckless decision is actually a wise one.

As Christians, we are children of God. We have been given God’s peace beyond understanding as well as His promise to work all things together for our good. In other words, we have something that the world doesn’t have…

“I have one desire now – to live a life of reckless abandon for the Lord, putting all my energy and strength into it.” – Elisabeth Elliot

Throw worldly caution to the wind…

We use the phrase “reckless abandon” to describe a life or a decision where someone abandons all common sense. It may seem reckless and possibly even dangerous. We make decisions that in the end, could be harmful to us in some way. But the truth is that when God is involved, no decision is reckless. When we are following God’s lead, nothing is a risk. The world may look on and call you foolish, but you know in your heart that you are living in God’s peace and wisdom. He will never lead you astray.

Leave your worries behind.

Jesus commanded us not to worry about anything. God is a good Father who takes care of His children. So when it comes to your finances, He’s got it covered. When it comes to your family, He’s got it covered. And when it comes to your day-to-day life and concerns, He’s got all of that covered too.

It’s time to recklessly abandon our worries once and for all and trust God fully to do all He has promised in our lives.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7

Abide in God’s peace beyond understanding.

This truly is the number one key to living a life of reckless abandon for God. You cannot abandon your earthly worries unless you replace them with the peace of God. Again, the world may call you crazy for being at peace in the midst of a trying circumstance, but God’s peace transcends all worldly understanding.

The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You. – Isaiah 26:3

Serving God with reckless abandon is only possible when we are willing to abandon our worldly concerns and replace them with His peace beyond all understanding.

I have one desire now - to live a life of reckless abandon for the Lord, putting all my energy and strength into it. - Elisabeth Elliot
