How to Stand in Faith When Things Don’t Seem to Change

Are you battle weary? Is your shield becoming heavy as you continue to stand in faith for what God has promised? You’ve searched the scriptures, and you’re certain that what you are praying for is His heart for you. He has made it clear that it’s His promise, yet as the weeks, months, and even years pass you are yet to see the manifestation of it. Does it seem like some prayers are answered with no wait at all and others must be contended for?

I understand. I’ve been there. I’m there right now, in fact. If you’ve been a Christian very long you’ve probably experienced this in your own life by now. How do you keep going when it seems like your answer is nowhere in sight?

Perhaps you need a breakthrough in your finances, healing for your body or mind, deliverance in an area of your life the enemy has held you captive. I’ve experienced all of these personally, and I can honestly say that God has never failed me. That doesn’t mean the answers to my prayers came easy. In fact, I’m standing in faith for a number of things right now, several that I’ve been praying about for many years now.

How can we keep our faith fresh during these times of waiting?

Here are a few tips that I’ve learned over the many years I’ve walked with the Lord:

  • Every day is a new day, a new opportunity to see God move in your life. I make it a habit of waking up each morning and immediately beginning to anticipate the goodness of God in my day. It’s not always easy, especially if your circumstances are screaming something different. But it’s a choice. It’s always a choice. I choose to see the goodness of God and to readily thank Him for it. If my body hurts I declare His healing promises. If money is tight, I declare the provision He’s promised me. Find your promise and take a stand. Let God’s Word be bigger in you than what your circumstances are saying.

  • Refuse to give up. I actually declare, “I will not give up. I will believe God and what He’s said above my circumstances.” You will be amazed at the strength, hope, joy and peace that will flood your heart by just deciding to not give up. Declare that God’s promise is TRUER than your circumstances. It will renew your ability to continue to stand in faith and trust Him.

  • Fill your heart and mind with things that strengthen your faith. Read the word of God; put it in your heart. Listen to good Bible teachers who encourage you. Worship and praise God for who He is and what He’s doing in your life, even before you see it. When your tank is running low and discouragement is setting in, it is essential to refuel and keep filling your heart and mind with the truth.

  • Keep track of your thoughts and your words. This is essential. If you keep your thoughts in line what God has to say about your situation, your words will follow. This key alone can mean the difference in your breakthrough. There are great biblical resources out there about renewing your mind, take advantage of it.

  • Remember you’re not alone. If you have received Christ as your savior you have been given the Holy Spirit to dwell within you. He alone is enough to guide you through whatever journey the Lord has you taking and provide you with everything you need to make it. Jesus gave us His promise. He will never leave us or forsake us. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you. He’s eager to do so.

  • Remember what God has done for you in the past. Remember the answers to prayer. Recall the times He’s restored you, healed you or a loved one, provided for you and walked you through difficult seasons in your life. God hasn’t changed. He loves to answer our prayers and show us His goodness.

When called to stand in faith for your circumstance, remember that we have a good Father who delights in keeping His promises.

As you can see, there are many things we can do to keep our faith strong. Most of it comes from making the decision daily, sometimes hourly, that we will trust God and not give up.

The answer doesn’t always look like we thought it would or should, but He did promise to work all things together for our good. He will answer. He is faithful. And He’s a good Father who delights in answering the prayers of His children. Step out in faith and see what He wants to do for you. If God never answered our prayers we would have no faith. Christianity would have ended a long time ago.

But He does answer. And you will have the testimony of His goodness to share with others who are waiting on their promises to be fulfilled.
