When Your Crown Falls Off: What It Means to Be Royal in the Eyes of God

My daughters love to play dress up… especially my youngest. Every morning we stare at the closet trying to pick out the princess dress she wants to wear that day. And let me just say that if her outfit does not include an enormous tutu, there will be tears! But it doesn’t stop with the dress. My daughters are regularly adorning themselves in play jewelry, tiaras, and sparkly shoes. They love to look like beautiful princesses; and as their mom, I love to see them twirl around the house feeling beautiful and confident.

Growing up changes us. Somewhere along the way we exchange our tiaras and Superman capes for reality. And I’m not so sure this is a good thing…

You were made to be royal. God created you with a destiny beyond your wildest dreams. As adults, it’s too easy to allow the realities and pressures of this life to consume us. It’s hard to imagine a world with no pain or sadness. Heavenly mansions, streams of living water, streets of gold… these are the things of fairy tales – right?

Truth: You are royal by birth… rebirth that is. When you were born again, you were born into a royal family. And no one can take that identity from you.

This is what it means to be royal…

  • Understand and never take for granted that you have been positioned and destined for a divine purpose.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

  • You have been given royal authority over the enemy as well as weaponry to use against his schemes.

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NIV)

  • No one can take away your royal identity.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. – John 10:27-28 (NIV)

  • The enemy sees you differently now that you’re a child of God. He actually flees when you resist him.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. – James 4:7 (NIV)

  • You are free to imagine and dream big – to view life in light of eternity instead of the here and now.

For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. – 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NLT)

What happens when life throws us a curve ball – when the storm threatens to knock our crown to the ground. Do we pick it back up and claim our identity in Christ? Or do we simply walk away and forget who we really are?

When my daughter’s “pretend” crown falls off, she picks it back up and puts it back on with little to no hesitation. But as adults, it’s hard sometimes to put our crowns back on.  The truth is that the enemy is in the business of knocking off crowns hoping that sooner or later we’ll grow weary and forget who we are.

Perhaps it’s time to allow our imaginations to run wild – to envision ourselves the way God sees us.

In His eyes, we are royalty. We are princesses and princes. We are superheroes with the power of the Holy Spirit living within us. No longer slaves and sinners. We are the beautiful bride of King Jesus.

It’s a truth we need to claim in every season of life. So when your crown falls off and life gets hard, pick it back up and declare who you really are in Christ. Don’t allow the enemy to convince you that you are anything less than royal.
