Walking Hand in Hand with Our Father We Find Everything We Need

I love holding hands with my toddlers. Their hands feel so small in my hand. When they hold my hand, I feel needed and loved. I get to protect them and keep them close. I get to lead them where I need them to go and keep them from wandering off. And I know that they sense this protection as well. They desire to be close to me when faced with new situations. They want to feel safe, and they feel safest when they are at my side.

One thing you must know about my girls is that they never leave home without a toy. (I’m pretty sure this is a universal toddler trait.) My husband and I allow them to take one toy each. This special toy is then carried everywhere. It’s their “friend” for the day.

My daughters have learned, however, that the toy has to be small enough to fit in one hand. Why you ask? Because they need at least one hand free at all times to hold my hand. If their toy is too big, then it must be left behind in the car. They can’t hold my hand if their hands are already full.

God’s Word speaks a lot about the hand of God. It’s mighty and fierce, yet gentle and full of love. As children of God, we have an amazing opportunity to walk through life holding the hand of our loving Father. Are we willing to let go of our “stuff” in order to free our hands to take hold of His?

I carry a lot of stuff around. Fear, insecurity, frustrations, worries… needless to say, my hands are full. God is more than willing to take my stuff, but I often struggle to let go. I don’t want these things in my life, but in some strange way, I find security in them. I’ve allowed them to be a part of my life for so long that I find comfort in them, much like my girls find comfort in their toys.

Am I willing to surrender my stuff to God and take hold of His hand?

God, please show me how to empty my hands and to surrender all of my “stuff” to you. I want to walk through this life close by your side – hand in hand.
