Point of View: Where Do You Stand? | alyssajhoward.comSo much of life is what we choose to make of it. How we see ourselves and the world around us truly impacts the life we lead. While I was online the other day, I couldn’t help but notice all of the inspirational quotes that people shared through social media. It seems that everyone is looking for a little inspiration. We know that staying positive can change our outlook on life; but when push comes to shove, it can be difficult to not be brought down by the people around us or difficult circumstances we encounter.

Many of us need a paradigm shift. We need to view life from a different angle. Catchy and inspirational quotes may tug at your heart-strings; but until you make a permanent change to your point of view, you will always end up back where you started.

Picture this: If you were to stand on your back patio and look north, what would you see? Now close your eyes and imagine a beautiful ocean with white sandy beaches. If you opened your eyes, would anything have changed? Nope. You would still be looking at the same thing that was there before. Wishing to see something differently cannot change what you are looking at. The only way to change what you see is to move and look at something else.

The same is true in life. You can’t expect to wishfully dream a positive life into existence.

Your point of view actually has more to do with your position than anything else. In other words, you have to change where you stand in order to change what you see. If you desire to see white sandy beaches, then you better be prepared to go to the beach.

As a Christian, I have learned that my point of view means everything. I could be going through the worst of situations and my point of view will drastically change the way I see that trial. I’ve learned that I can be strong through the storms of life when I have a godly perspective. But the opposite can be true as well. I’ve had many good times spoiled by a negative outlook on life.

If you desire to see the world differently, check your point of view. Where are you standing?

Point of View: Where Do You Stand? | alyssajhoward.comSome of us need to change where we stand…
If you have never encountered the love and hope of God and if all you see is hopelessness and despair, it is time to change where you are standing. This was made possible through Jesus’ death and resurrection. He made a way for you to change your point of view.

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world…But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.Ephesians 2:1-2, 4-6 (NLT)

This passage in Ephesians tells us that when we give our lives to Him, God has “seated us with him in the heavenly realms.” Because of what Christ did for us, we have a way out of our sin. We no longer have to see the world from a place of darkness; we can view it from our seat with Him.

As Christians, we have the choice… do we see the world from our seat in Christ? Or do we see the world from our place in this physical world?

Some of us need to look around…

Just as there are those who need to change where they are standing, there are those who have changed their position (surrendered their life to Christ) but refuse to look around and acknowledge where they now stand. Many of us choose to see what we used to see rather than what is now right in front of us.

The Bible tells us that we are now citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20), yet many of us look around at this dark world and see it as our home. We need to continually remind ourselves of where we stand in Christ.

…for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)

When you change your point of view as a believer, you will begin to see the world from where you are seated with Christ… with eternal eyes. Fear and doubt no longer have any power over you; and you will begin to see the world and your circumstances through His eyes rather than your own.

So look around. Where do you stand?

This was pretty close to what I was trying to write this morning, but just couldn’t get into my own words. Sometimes it is hard to change what you see. Many times it’s because we are too stubborn to realize that we need to shift our paradigm so that we are seeing it the right way. Sometimes it’s easier to wallow in our depression rather than change how we are viewing something. Saying the right things for inspiration isn’t always going to help someone. They need something deeper than words. Something that can truly change their lives. What they need is a friend to help show them where they need to be standing in order to see life the way that God wants us to see it.

  2. When we base our point of view on who we are and what we have in Christ Jesus, we remain unshakable.
We remain seated with him in heavenly places.
Thank you for this awesome post.
    You are blessed.

  3. Alyssa, I was just having this conversation with a sweet young woman this week, and this truth that changing our point of view changes everything is so true. The difficulty is often getting our emotions in the right place first so we are able to even consider making the necessary choices in our point of view. You gave me more to consider the next time I speak with her. So glad you were a part of the Fresh Market Friday community this week because this was perfect timing:) Crystal~
